The Cheapest Deer Food Plot-Acorns

Nowadays everyone is so interested in building and developing their own food plot to funnel deer unto an area that they desire. The name of the site is Cheap Deer Food Plots, so I am all ways looking for ways that hunters can achieve their goals as inexpensively as possible. I was doing a piece on the importance of scouting for deer signs when I stumbled upon a video that reminded me of a very important aspect to whitetail behavior. Whitetails love acorns! So, in my mind, if you can find a natural honey hole of acorns near to where deer live, you have just found the cheapest deer food plot their is. As long as you own the land or have permission to hunt it, it doesn’t cost you a dime to maintain. I am from the Northeastern part of the US and we have all known about acorns, since the beginning of deer hunting in this region. This is especially true if you can find a nice group of White Oaks which the deer seem to prefer. Whitetails will walk right past corn, alfalfa, legumes, you name it, to get to acorns. The primary idea here is that instead of building it and they will come, go to where god has all ready built it and wait for them to show up.

The guy in the video is incredible. Not that he is that unique, there are tons of guys just like him spread out across this land however, you never seem to see guys like this on TV. He is the real McCoy and with his passion and energy for scouting, one can tell that he has harvested many deer and he knows what he is talking about.  And he has done it the real way, not on a deer farm or ranch where a monkey could do it. Just remember the key to this video, to me, is if you can find a natural food source along with any deer signs what so ever, you have got yourself the cheapest deer food plot.

Cheap Deer Food Plots Home Page

Here at Cheap Deer food Plots, our goal is to help the little guy, grow and maintain, one or more deer food plots as inexpensively as possible. Let me first say that there is no real cheap way to have a quality deer food plot. There are however, many ways to have a very expensive, money pit, I can’t believe what this costing me, food plot. Our objective is to provide quality information to you so you can obtain your plot goals as cheaply as possible. There are many companies out there that lead you to believe that you need there “specially” crafted and engineered seeds and products so you can have monster bucks walk up to you and surrender themselves. That sounds nice but it can be costly and might not yield a thing. Many of these companies market products that don’t even do well in many of the areas that their customers live in. The quality of your plot is very specific to the climate and soil that it resides in. The truth is, is that there is not one single plant that can work anywhere for all times of the year. You must consider your unique piece of land and what it requires.

It is also important to realize that plots do not serve as the primary source of food. Deer food plots are supplemental for nutritional deficiencies through the course of the year. In theory, a hunter should firstly do what he can to assist the natural forage that is all ready available for the herd, in that specific region. The dead of winter, in the North, is the leanest time of year for most deer and if you provide nutrients, at that time, you are helping the herd survive the winter and deliver them into the spring, in much better physical condition. Many people now believe that the late summer is the toughest time for deer in the Southern states. Very few hunters consider the late summer to be a lean time of year. The luscious green plants from the spring have run through their growing phase and are much less desirable and nutritious.

One of the most important and less untilized requirements of starting a food plot is testing the pH of the soil. This step is crucial in growing a good, yeilding plant for serveral years. Most soil is a little acidic with a pH of less the 7. Lime is a cheap base prodect that can be easily utilized to bring the soil back to a more nuetral pH.

Next to this site, the most useful tool available to the deer food plot grower, which is free, is the local Natural Resources Service. In some areas, you can look for the County soil map.  They can help you with all kinds of information from soil properties, to aerial maps, to new hunting areas and contours of the land that you may not be aware of. These tools can be priceless in the information that you can gather to help best prepare for the task at hand. Knowing what your are dealing with, ,is half the battle for deer food plots.

Lastly, many of the instructions and videos for deer food plots assume that everyone is a farmer and has 100′s of thousands of dollars invested in land and equipment to assist them to build these big beautiful plots. In my opinion, if you have a farm, you probably all ready have a huge deer plot. If you don’t, you should probably get out of the farming business. We are going to try to provide you with information for smaller plots, using small tractors or 4-wheelers, some plots, you don’t even need any machinery. So, that is our goal and we hope that it is your also.
